David Stanger

David Stanger | Hummingbird

David is one of Canada's best-known media professionals having spent over 30 years in the Canadian advertising industry in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. He has worked for full-service agencies, independent media companies, and also spent two years as a client with Bristol Myers.

Stanger is perhaps best known for his 14 years with BBDO (formerly Baker Lovick) as both National Media Director, and managing partner of the agency's Vancouver operation. During his tenure with BBDO, he also served as the Account Director on A&W Food Services, Expo 86 and several multi-outlet retail accounts. Along with Peter Stringham, the agency's President, and Creative Director Larry Tolpin, Stanger was instrumental in introducing Account Planning into the agency and was part of the management team that in 1991 led Baker Lovick Vancouver to being named the first-ever Canadian recipient of Ad Age's International Agency-of-the-Year.

Working with clients such as The Brick Warehouse, The Overwaitea Food Group and True Value Hardware, DSA has experienced continuous growth since its start-up.

A firm believer in the need to put something back into the industry that has provided him with such a great career, Stanger has taught media and marketing to several thousand students over the past 22 years. He spent 17 years as a marketing instructor at BCIT, and after "retiring" in 2002, turned his attention to running regional and customized workshops for a number of different clients and industry groups. In addition to his time at BCIT, he has also lectured at Simon Fraser University, York University, The University of Alberta and Ryerson. In 2004, Stanger was presented the prestigious "Audrey" award, recognition from his peers and associates in the industry for his outstanding contributions to the media profession.

Committed to media research in Canada, Stanger spent 3½ years as chairman of ComBase, the Canadian Community Newspaper Association's tripartite committee that launched the first national readership study for the weekly/community newspaper industry in October 2003. In February of 2005, Stanger stepped down as chair to focus on the continued growth of the DSA Media Network, but he remains a director of ComBase.

Married with two daughters (and a grandson), he juggles his time between the DSA office in Langley, BC the DSA Baron office in Calgary, and the Octane Media office in Regina.
